As part of our Centre Quality Improvement Plan we have been focusing on Quality Area 3:Physical Environment.

Our latest project was the building & making over of a Kmart cubby house which the children, families & educators have been discussing & planning for the past few months together.
To begin our project we discussed with the children, educators and families what style of cubby to choose as we have had previously a pallet cubby and a teepee that just haven’t seemed to fit our space or withstood children’s play!
It was decided that a Kmart cubby house makeover would be best and longer lasting.
We searched through Pinterest with the children. Their excitement shown towards added extras such as a bell, light, serving bench and door handle.
Colours were discussed as children looked at different colour swatches brought in to the centre and a strong consensus towards purple and green (teal) colours.
The cubby house took a couple of consecutive weekends to put together, paint and add accessories.
Educators documented this process in our Quality Improvement Plan and are looking forward to our other centre projects for QA 3.
The Details
Paint: We used ‘grey pail’ for all over the house, ‘magic magentia’ for the door and roof and ‘teal trip’ for the window trimmings.
Accessories: Bunnings was our go to for the ship bell, solar lamp light, brass door handle, toy phone installed on the inside, decorative brackets to hold up the pine shelf on the side, which was covered in lacquer to last in the outdoors.
